Hitler Rises To Power In Germany
The Rise of the Nazis
The National Socialist German Workers' Party is called Nazi for short.
This group believed that Germany had to overturn the Treaty of Versailles.
Its policies formed that German brand of fascism known as Nazism.
Hitler soon became the leader of the Nazi Party.

Hitler and the Nazis plotted to seize power in Munich.
He ended up getting arrested, and sentenced to five years in prison.
Mein Kampf
While in jail, Hitler wrote the book Mein Kampf.
He wrote about his beliefs and the goals he had for Germany.
He believed that Germans were a "master race".
He called the Treaty of Versailles an outrage, and vowed to regain German lands.
Leaving Prison
After leaving prison, Hitler revived the Nazi Party.
The economic effects of the Great Depression helped Hitler's cause.
The German people were desperate for a strong leader.
Civil unrest broke out once America stopped giving Germany loans.

Hitler declared Germany was overpopulated, and needed more lebensraum, or space.
He promised to get the space through imperialism.
He wanted to rebuild Germany's military and conquer Eastern Europe and Russia.

Hitler Becomes Chancellor
The Nazis were the biggest political party in 1932.
Conservative leaders thought they could use Hitler for their own purposes by controlling him.
In 1933, Hitler was named chancellor.
Hitler and the Nazis stirred up fear of the Communists because they blamed them for a fire in the Reichstag building.
Hitler used his power to turn Germany into a totalitarian state.
This means he banned all other political parties and had anyone who opposed arrested.
An elite unit called the SS was created.
This squad was only loyal to Hitler. They arrested and murdered hundreds of Hitler's enemies.
The terror of this scared most Germans into total obedience of HItler.
