27.3 Fascism Rises in Europe

Mussolini became dictator of Italy in mid-1920
At this time, Hitler was little-known. Once WW1 broke out, Hitler volunteered for the Germany army
At the end of the war, Hitler settled in Munich.
While in Munich, he joined a right-wing political group that shared his belief, that Germany had to overrun the Treaty of Versailles and combat communism.
This group named itself the National Socialist German Workers' Party (NAZI) for short.
Its policies formed the the brand of Fascism known as Nazism. This party adopted the swastika as its symbol, and had set up a private militia called the storm troopers or brown shirts.
Hitler and the Nazi Party planned to seize power of Munich in 1923, however the attempt failed and Hitler was arrested. He was tried for treason but was sentenced to only sentenced to 5 years, and served less than 9 months.

Hitler Becomes Chancellor
The Nazis had become the largest political party by 1932. People believed they could control Hitler and use him to their advantage, big mistake.
In January 1933, they advised President Paul von Hindenburg to name Hitler chancellor. Now Hitler came into power legally.
How do they think this was a good idea?
Hitler called for new elections trying to hopefully win a parliamentary majority.
A fire destroyed the Reichstag, building 6 days before the election, and the nazis blamed the commies to get everyone mad at them. Hitler won the election of course.
Hitler quickly turn Germany into a totalitarian state. He banned all other political parties, those who didn't agree, he had them arrested.
Hitler quickly took command of the economy, including transportation and technology. New laws banned strikes, dissolved independent labor unions, and gave the government authority over business and labor.
Thats no all we wanted, he wanted control over every aspect of German life. He burned books that he didn't agree to and made churches unable to speak out. And children joined the Nazi party.
