Bandura et al. (1961)
Results
The children who observed aggressive models exhibited far more aggressive behaviour than the other groups and exhibited the same forms of physical and verbal abuse as the models.
-
-
-
Children also exhibited aggressive behaviour that they did not see, which shows that the children understood that the type of behaviour they were exhibiting towards the doll was aggression.
-
Procedure
Children were shown a role model interacting with a Bobo doll based on the group they were put into as described in the method. The children were then allowed into the room and interact with the Bobo doll.
Then the children were taken to another room where they were primed for aggression arousal, where children were allowed to play with toys for 2 minutes before being told that they couldn't play with the toys anymore.
In the third room the children were observed through a one-way mirror and their behaviour was scored for aggression.
-
Limitations
The study used children, so the results are not generalisable to the wider population
Method
36 boys and 36 girls between the ages of 3 and 6 were chosen. All of the children were from the Stanford University Nursery School.
-
Conclusion
All added up, the researchers interpreted this as meaning that social learning had taken place, and that similarity to role models (male or female) appeared to be a factor.
