The United Nations has had considerable success when dealing with the climate crisis. Through the Paris climate deal, which was signed in 2015 and put in force in 2016, and pledged to keep the involved countries ‘well below’ 2.0C above pre-industrial times, and preferably to 1.5C. Under the agreement, each country sets their own emission-reduction targets, known as national determined contributions (NDCs), which are reviewed every 5 years in order to raise ambition. Rich countries are required to help poorer nations adapt.
