The Witan: Anglo - Saxon kings call on the witan for advice.
Monarchs In Control: After 1066 medieval monarchs had a 'Great Council' of the most powerful lords
Magna Charter: Power barons and nobles forced King John to sign the Magna Charta (Great Charter) in 1215.
Simon de Montfort's Parliament: Simon de Montfort - and the baron - who had defeated Henry III in battle, called his own parliament in 1265 to help him run the country.
Rise of the commons: Edward III (1327-77) held regular parliaments because he needed to raise taxes. he also called representatives from counties (knights) and towns (mainly rich merchants) to attend.
Growing Influence: Throughout the fourteenth century, the lords and the Commons wanted to have their views about running the country taken into account by the monarch. It became accepted that the new taxes could not be raised unless the parliament agreed.
Civil War: By the 17th Century Parliament was very powerful. King Charles I tried to rule without help from the government, which ended in a very bad effect - The English Civil War -
