IP addresses help to identify the pieces of hardware connected to your network. To locate a particular device you would need to organize the IP addresses in a logical way. This is where subnetting excels as a tool to help you maintain efficiency across your network.
There could be hundreds of thousands of devices that are connected within a network. A subnet mask echoes an IP address, but it can only be utilized within an internal network.
This mask helps to identify which part of the IP address relates to the network and which part relates to the host. A subnet mask creates the tool which enables a router to match an IP address with a sub-network.

Advantages

Disadvantages
Subnetting decreases the total number of IP addresses in the network but may need buying additional hardware such as a router. So, it may cost lots of money.
It cannot correct the lack of efficiency because companies still assign address block regarding to classes.

If you work inside a large organization or business, particularly one spread across multiple branches, it's highly likely that it deploys a subnet. A subnetting, or sub networking, is the process of splitting a single large network into two or more strands. This means that an otherwise mammoth and unwieldy network can be subdivided into smaller, more localized networks.
