Bowel Obstruction - Coggle Diagram

- - - - 1/3 have downs
      - a/w other congenital malformations
      - tx = surgical

    - - dangerous - may lead to infarct of entire midgut

      - volvulus = loop of intestine twists around itself + the mesentery that supports it, resulting in a bowel obstruction
    - - almost all have CF
      - dislodge using Gastrografin contrast medium
    - - will usually pass spontaneously
    - - part of intestine slides into adjacent part of intestine, 'telescoping'
- - - - can result in temporary improvement + thus delay dx
    - - severe, life-threatening
      - sometimes due to C diff
    - - chronic profound constipation
      - FTT
      - abdo distension
      - usually without soiling
    - - absence of ganglion cells
      - presence of large acetylcholinesterase +ve N trunks
    - - initial colostomy followed by anastomosing normally innervated bowel to anus
