- - - - From the point of view of adherence to Jewish religious laws and practices, 20 percent of the population complies with all religious precepts, 60 percent complies with some, according to their personal inclinations and community traditions, and 20 percent are basically non-observant.
      - But since Israel was conceived as a Jewish state, Shabbat (Saturday) and all Jewish holidays have been instituted as national holidays and are celebrated by the entire Jewish population and observed by all, to a greater or lesser extent.
    - - Over the centuries, they established numerous communities in countries near and far, in which they lived long periods of development and prosperity, but were also sometimes subjected to cruel discrimination, brutal pogroms and total or partial expulsions.
    - - The orthodox sector aspires to extend religious legislation to other fields beyond personal law, which is subject to its exclusive jurisdiction, while the non-observing sector sees it as religious coercion and a violation of the democratic nature of the state. A constant topic of discussion is by what criteria a person is defined as Jewish.
