There were many species like dinosaurs, a few mammals, trees(similar to the ones we have today) and fish(similar to the ones we have today). The dinosaurs got all extinct leaving only the few mammals, resulting on us.
The main theory that explains this extinction is the impact of an asteroid in the Yucatan peninsula; resulting in the extinction of dinosaurs.
