- - - - some who argue that parents believe that the sooner their children are exposed to English as the language of learning the sooner they will gain proficiency in it. There are two questions here:
      - • Where is the statistical evidence to support this perception?
      - • If it is true that parents think this, why do parents think this? p.7

    - - learning two non-native/foreign languages at school is on the increase and the Commission of the European Communities recently reported that ‘In 2000, 40% of pupils in early school education were receiving tuition in two foreign languages; by 2006 this had risen to 52%’ (COM, 2008, p. 15).
        
        but this is not the argument here!!
      - how can you do this in primary? need specialist teachers. Prep can but state schools??
      - if these additional/ 'foreign' languages are some children's home language that's not equitable!! ???
      - so? learning French does not help a kid already struggling with English and an Indian language

    - - bilinguals develop a heightened awareness of the forms, meanings, and rules of language (Ben-Zeev, 1977; Bialystok, 1987, 1988, 1991, 2001a, 2001b, 2004; Eviatar & Ibrahim, 2000; Galambos & Goldwin-Meadow, 1990; Ianco-Worral, 1972; Ricciardelli, 1992a, 1992b; Yelland, Pollard, & Mercuri, 1993)
    - - complete forms/leaflets. ‘Which language/s do you intend introducing to your baby?’ or ‘Have you received information about bilingualism from your midwife?’ (Edwards & Pritchard Newcombe, 2006, p. 141). not left to mothers alone.
    - - However, advise families if asked= personal opinion not based on facts/training
    - - Kruskal–Wallis one-way analysis??? is this how they split 4 Likert scale options into agree/ disagree?
      - immigrant students seem to underperform when compared to native speakers and this is often due to the language difficulties they may encounter (OECD, 2006).
      - of course teachers think it delays learning of English...not getting grounding in English at home...stupid question and interpretation!!
        
        Of major concern are the widespread views that the frequent use of the home language delays the learning of the host language and gives rise to confusion in the students’ minds.
        
        would a teacher working in Italy or Austria advise an English-speaking mother to stop speaking English with her child in the home? Would the same teacher advice another mother to stop speaking Punjabi in the home?

        I would not call (46.6% Italy, 59.5% Austria, and 29% UK) a 'large proportion' ...twisting the stats!!!
