[Psychological] Research Methods
Experimental Methods
Variables
Independent variable
Is the variable that varies to see effect on the dependent variable (cause)
Dependent variable
variable that is affected by the independent variable (effect)
Placebo Effect
Where one group who do not receive special treatment are led to believe there is change despite receiving a fake
Double Blind
Where both researchers and participants do not know who is the control group and who is the experimental group
Correlation
The link between two variables
Correlation =/= Causation
+/-1.00 means strong correlation
Negative Correlation = Variables go in the opposite directions
Positive Correlation = Variables go in the same directions
Example
Electric shock exp, where one group is told they would expreience high pain from the shock, the other is told it will be a mild shock. Afterwards, they are able to choose if to wait with people or alone as there is a delay
The study was about sociability in people. Cause and effect, group with thought they would receive high shock had high anxiety (experimental group)
groups
Control Group
receive no special treatment
Experimental group
they would receive special treatment (independent variable)
Methods
Scientific Method
Develop Explanations
Theories
Hypothesis
Variables
Conduct Research
Step1: Formulate a testable hypothesis (Prediction)
Step 2: Design the Study (What is the Independent variable and what is the dependent variable)
Step 3: Collect Research Data
Step 4:
Research Method
Non-Experimental Methods
Survey
Questionnaires
Case studies
is used when there is a rare phenomenon; an in-depth investigation
Naturalistic observation
Where you observe a subject without intervention
Research Issues
Halo effect
