SIMPLE PAST
IRREGULAR
For irregular verbs their spelling in the simple past tense is totally different
think - thought
see - saw
write - wrote
say - said
REGULAR
We form the past simple of most regular verbs by adding "ed" to the main verb
wash – washed
kiss – kissed
play - played
For verbs ending in "e", we add "d"
For verbs ending in a consonant y, we drop the y and add "ied"
For verbs ending in a stressed vowel between two consonants, we double the last consonant and add "ed"
stop – stopped
fit – fitted
cry – cried
carry – carried
love – loved
like - liked
Structures of the simple past
simple past of a verb can be structured in the affirmative, negative or question form
In the affirmative form, the verb, when it is regular, is added the ending "ed".
AFFIRMATIVE
I jumped
You jumped
She jumped
For the negative form, the verb remains in the infinitive, that is, without adding the ending "ed".
The same happens for the interrogation form
INTERROGATIVE
Did I jump?
Did you jump?
Did she jump?
NEGATIVE
I did not jump
You did not jump
She did not jump
