Should Students Have To Wear Uniforms?
Hook
"Our uniform is part of our school identity, uniting our students and we hope that they take pride in wearing it." -Bryn Thomas
Imagine how much time you would save if you didn't have to decide what you were going to wear for school.
Did you know that school uniforms can potentially help students to be in school academically?
Specialized Information
When school uniforms were enforced, officials noticed a change in the student's behavior as well as a higher level of discipline and this led to more elite schools around the world to enforce school uniform policies.
Uniforms represent discipline, organization, pride in the student's appearance, and it teaches students to dress smartly.
Uniforms tend to be lower in budget because parents are usually buying the new trends for their kids which would be more expensive.
Slowly, uniforms have made its way into a North America with a quarter of the schools having enforced the uniform policy.
Thesis Statement
Students should have to wear uniforms in school because it's a cost effective choice, promotes discipline, and encourages equality.
Argument #1: Lower Budget
In the US, half the parents agreed that uniforms are cheaper than the cloths that a child would usually prefer. Parents would only have to provide 1 or 2 sets of uniforms through the entire schools year.
If siblings, relatives, or friends had attended the school, secondhand uniform wear is permitted, thus lowering the cost even more.
Since uniforms are cheaper, it would help decrease a parent's financial problems.
Parents can have less stress and time consumption of having to always supply new clothes for their children. Children's stress would be reduced if they didn't have to worry about buying expensive clothes.
Argument #2: Uniforms help students have more disciplined in school
A study found that when uniforms were introduced, language test scores improved by 3 percentile points.
The main reason why most people in non-uniform schools got in trouble was what they chose wore.
When students are all wearing the same outfit, they are less concerned about what they look like and if they fit in, meaning that they have more time and attention to school. Most of the time, students without uniform policies took more time to think about what they should wear rather than devoting their time to schoolwork. They would be putting more time into stress thinking about their clothes instead of school.
There are less distractions so they can focus on learning rather than talking about the latest clothing trends, therefore improving a student's discipline and behavior.
Argument #3: Uniforms promote equality and students will be able to fit in.
School uniforms help student's be more disciplined which creates an equal environment.
It is a way to maintain the same level of social equality between students and when everyone is dressed up in the same way, nobody has to worry about being better than the rest.
When everyone is wearing the same thing, it can bring different people with a wide variety of backgrounds together.
School uniforms can decrease the amount of peer pressure there is rather than other students having higher standards of clothes.
History and Background
Uniforms started out in elite schools because they wanted a way to ensure the student's safety.
Uniforms were used to mark what a person's status was in competitive and prestigious schools.
The use of school uniforms were first recorded on England, 1222.
Uniforms started out as a robe-like outfit called the cappa clausa before making its way into what we call modern day uniforms.
Conclusion
Concluding statement: If it is desired to fit in while still excelling in school and keeping a low budget, then mandatory uniforms in all schools will exceed every single one of those requirements.
Thesis restated: Implementing uniforms into all schools will create fairness between clothing, and enhance the students' discipline while still keeping a low budget.
