Full supervisor meeting - 2021-04-26
Stephen, Kate and Derek all present
Mark absent because he was getting his second shot
Gave a short presentation
Recapped last meeting
Described progress since then
Ran through results of regional and local desk-based research
Went through initial results of fabric analysis and recording
Also had a slide with an overview of fabric research
Certain forms are distinct and early and can provide a proxy for early kiln sites operating in Bath
Includes Westhampnett Voussoirs and half-box flue types; what about relief-patterned flue tiles?
Also CBM in period II bath mortar
Discussed Historic England Sampling Proposal
Can take 6 weeks or more
Nothing back from Mel yet
Hopefully will not take another 6 weeks after official application
Wait for now, but consider alternative sampling strategy (perhaps extensive across Bath material from different sites) if application is refused
Unclear when will hear back, or when sampling by Cliveden could take place at present
Positive feedback overall
Good that I have laid out two hypotheses with the stamp stuff, as allows it to be tested with the evidence
More complicated than it seems as I need to compare this material to kiln sites first in order to understand this!
Are fabrics 01/10 and 11 perhaps Charmouth Mudstone mixed with Bridport Sands?
Sussex connection interesting, and results of analysis of Westhampnett voussoirs could be significant
Did reiterate that I need to view and understand material from regional kiln sites. How will I facilitate access to more distant kiln site material such as Little London and London region?
A few places with early tiles at the Roman Baths but difficult to access (and I was aware of them anayway)
Includes bonding tile courses in Spring outflow and wall tiles in mortar at the base of the reservoir
Contact Peter Davenport as he may know more about what happened with the Spring Reservoir tiles
Need to finish timetable and submit ahead of supervisor meeting next week
Would be good to lay out objectives of each activity and contribution to thesis and project
Don't worry about creating too close a timetable, as it is inevitable that it may change in response to progress
Send chapter drafts to Stephen
Clay exploitation as well as CBM chapters?
