meta analysis of the strange situation IJZENDOORN AND KROONEBERG
aim
to asses whether within seperate samples there was a pattern in the distribution of attachment types
to assess the extent of inter and intra cultural differences in attachment
to asses similarities and differences in the amount of type A,B,C attachment types in samples
procedure
a meta analysis of 32 studies from 8 countries that used strange situation procedure
1,990 children were studied altogether
infants were below the age of 2
findings
Type A insecure avoidant: 21%
Type B secure: 67%
Type C insecure resistant: 12%
in samples from all countries (except Germany) modal attachment was Type B secure.
the highest of type A was found in Germany
intra cultural differences were greater than inter cultural differences
Type A was more common in western cultures whilst type C was more common in japan and china
conclusion
the data suggests there is a difference in the pattern of cross- cultural attachment types across cultures
intra cultural differences greater than inter cultural ones
overall was similar to what ainsworth found
evaluation
such differences were not due to methodological differences as intra differences were found in different samples from the same research data drawn from unrepresented cultures from the meta analysis
results are not conclusive
researches can analyse in a biased way
