Comparing Formative and Summative Assessment
The goal of summative assessments is to evaluate student learning and academic achievement. This typically occurs at the end of a unit, term, semester or year—performance is compared to a universal standard or standards set by the school.
Are important benchmarks to assess student learning. They also can reflect the level of education and teaching that an institution is providing to their students.
Useful to assess curriculum and see whether there are areas in need of improvement or adapting
Performance Assessment
This assessment measures how well students apply their knowledge, skills, and abilities to authentic problems. The key feature is that it requires the student to produce something authentic which is scored against specific criteria.
Rationale
While a test is an efficient way to gather evidence about students' conceptual knowledge, a performance assessment is a better tool for gathering evidence about what students can do with their knowledge. Effective performance assessments allow students to apply knowledge to solve a problem or demonstrate a skill.

Diagnostic Assessment
Diagnostic assessments are pretests. They usually serve as a barometer for how much pre-loaded information a student has about a topic. The word diagnosis is defined as an analysis of the nature or condition of a situation, which is exactly how teachers tend to use them.
Diagnostic tests help to tell the teacher (and the student) how much they know and don’t know about an upcoming topic
Diagnostic tests help to inform the teacher’s lesson planning, learning objectives, and identify areas that may need more or less time spent on.
Components
Happen at the beginning of a unit, lesson, quarter, or period of time.
Goal of understanding student’s current position to inform effective instruction
Identify strengths and areas of improvement for the student
Low-stakes assessments (Usually do not count as a grade)

Formative assessment is a way to gauge where your students learning is at. Instead of evaluating their learning, it is more of a diagnostic wherein you can assess their learning style, how they are progressing, provide feedback, and improve or change how you teach them.
Allows teachers to informally assess where their students are at in terms of learning and what teaching practices have been effective or not
Allows for students to identify their own areas of strength or areas that need improvement
Assessment of, as, and for learning
Assessment for, assessment as and assessment of learning are approaches that enable teachers to gather evidence and make judgements about student achievement. These are not necessarily discrete approaches and may be used individually or together and formally or informally.
For Learning
reflects a view of learning in which assessment helps students learn better, rather than just achieve a better mark
Formal and informal assessment activities as part of learning
Transparent goals for the learning activity
Effective feedback that motivates the learner and can lead to improvement
A belief that all students can improve is reflected
Assessment for learning involves teachers using evidence about students' knowledge, understanding and skills to inform their teaching. Can be known as a "formative assessment that can be used throughout teaching.

As Learning
Assessment as learning occurs when students are their own assessors. Students monitor their own learning, ask questions and use a range of strategies to decide what they know and can do, and how to use assessment information for new learning.
Gives the students opportunity to take responsibility for their own learning
Ensures that students ask questions about their learning
Teachers and students create learning goals to encourage growth and development
Gives ways students can use formal and informal feedback and self-assessment to help them understand the next steps in learning
Encourages peer assessment, self-assessment and reflection.

Of Learning
Assessment of learning assists teachers in using evidence of student learning to assess achievement against outcomes and standards. Can be called a ‘summative assessment', it usually occurs at defined key points during a teaching work or at the end of a unit, term or semester, and may be used to rank or grade students.
Can plan future learning goals and pathways for students
Evidence of achievement to the wider community, including parents, educators, the students themselves and outside groups
Clear interpretation across all levels
