A3333's Graph a linear equation explanation
how to graph a line?
ordered pairs
input
x
output
y
graph
y-axis
Vertical line
x-axis
horizontal line
What you are trying to do is graph to points and connect them to make a line
plotting equation
y-intercept(b)
point on the horizontal line
slope(m)
rise
is the number in a slope that is on top. Depending if it's negative or positive you go up or down spaces by the number provided
after you connect the new point to the old one which you did rise/run to
run
is the number on the bottom of the fraction. It goes towards the left.
after you connect the new point to the old one which you did rise/run to

how to find a slope of a line?
3 methods to find slope
Using Slope formula (change in y / change in x)
m= y2- y1/x2-x1
to solve a slope using the slop formula, you're going to use the coordinates of each point to find slope. the rise is going to be the coordinate of the second point minus the y coordinate of the first point. the run is going to be the x coordinate of the second point minus the ex coordinate of the first point. you then simplify and have your answer.
From the equation of a line, ⇒ y=mx+b
In the quation y=mx+b, the letter m stands for the slope so if it is a fraction you already have the slope, but if it is just a number then youre youre going to make it over one, even though that is the same meaning it allows you to have a run.
Using Rise/Run on a graph
rise
you choose a plotted point from the line and either move up or down depending on if its a negative or positive slop
run
we then choose a second point and we ALWAYS move to the right no matter if its a positive or negative slope. you then count how much you went up or down and that is your rise and numerator. you then count how much you moved to the right and that is your run which is also the denominator

how to use y=mx+b?
m
slope
rise
up
down
run
right
b
y-intercept
location on y-axis
(x, b)
y
is what you are trying to find
equation example
In the equation you are trying to find out what y is, to do that you multiply m and x then add b. The answer is depending on what m, x, and b are.

How to write the equation of a line?
Given the slope and the y-intercept
Ex: m=4 and y-intercept = -2 ⇒
the equation of this line is y = 4x - 2
Write the equation of a line given a graph
Write the equation of a line given a graph
1.From the graph, find the slope (m): rise/run
2.Find the y-intercept
3.use m and b to write the equation y = mx + b
