Origins of Psychology.
Wundt!!!
- He was the first person to call himself a psychologist.
- He believed that all aspects of nature including the human mind, could be studies scientifically.
- He paved the way for the acceptance of psychology as a distinct science in its own right.
- In 1879 Wundt opened the first psychology lab in Germany. - The aim was to describe the nature of human consciousness aka. the mind.
- He wishes to do this in a carefully controlled and scientific environment.
- His approach was aimed at breaking down behaviour such as sensation into their basic elements therefore, it was called structuralism.
- His technique was called introspection.
Introspection.
Introspection was the first systematic experimental attempt to study the mind by breaking up conscious awareness into basic structures of thoughts, images and sensations.
-
Although Wundt's early attempts to study the mind would have been seen as naïve today, his work was significant as it marked the separation of modern, scientific psychology from its broader philosophical roots.
