ANXIETY DISORDERS

- Anxiety Disorders:Characterized by excessive and persistent fear and anxiety
- Anxiety is closely related to to fear although fear involves an instantaneous reaction to a potential threat
- Since anxiety motivates us it’s important for our health, safetly, anxiety, and well-being
- Around 25-30% of the U.S population will experience an anxiety disorder in their lifetime
- More common in women than men

Agoraphobia
- Agoraphobia : (literally meaning fear of the marketplace) characterized by intense fear, anxiety, and avoidance by intense fear, anxiety, and avoidance of situation in which it would be difficult to escape/receive help when experiencing panic attack symptoms
- This is a phobia that is listed as a different anxiety disorder, separate from specific phobia(s)
- Avoid situations with lots of people
- 14% of U.S. population experiences agoraphobia

Specific Phobias
- Specific Phobia : (used to be known as simple phobia) When a person experiences excessive, distressing, and persistent fear about a specific thing
- Phobia is a greek word meaning fear
- Most people with phobia know that these fears are typically irrational but will still go out of their way to avoid the phobic stimulus
- Typically the phobia/phobic stimulus causes fear and anxiety that is disruptive to the person’s life
