Hortense:
Secrets daughter of Cynthia who was adopted as a baby.
She works as an optician - well educated.
We don't see Hortense reach out to Cynthia for the first time roughly half way through the film.
in the Café, externally she looks calm and acting like a professional.
She looked bored of Cynthia's crying. - she just wants to get answers about who she really is.
Cynthia:
She had to look after her father and brother from the age of ten after her mother's death. - she missed out on having a proper childhood due to this. - her life has been full of sacrifices.
She has spent so long giving love, she has forgotten what it was liked to be loved and needs constant reassurance that she is loved - 'You do love me don't you.'
She is the mother of Roxanne and is revealed to be the birth mother of Hortense. - the first disruption to the equilibrium.
She is still living in her childhood home surrounded by her father's old belongings. - she is trapped and clinging on to the past and doesn't want to let it go.
When she first meets with Hortense, she becomes in denial that she is her daughter.
Calls Monica a snob. - they do not get along at all.
Monica:
Does not get along with Cynthia at all. - called a snob by Cynthia.
She is jealous of what Cynthia has. - 'Your so lucky Cynthia'
She likes to show off her accomplishments. - she shows Jane and Cynthia around the house in a proud manner.
'At least we've made something of ourselves' - rubbing in the fact that she has a loving husband, money, lovely belongings and a big house.
Maurice
He is the mediator of the film.
Doesn't have a great relationship with his sister - except occasionally on the phone.
His job allows him to reflect on his family. - he seems many happy families knowing it would a struggle to get his to do this.
