CH24: Seed Plants II: Angiosperms, Evolutionary Changes, "angio"…
-
Evolutionary Changes
- Double fertilization probably came first, not sure if it's a shared ancestral feature but it is also present in some gnetophytes (not closely related to angiosperms)
- Production of bisexual flowers was most likely also one of the first transformations, all flowering plant clades have megasporophylls above microsporophylls on a single axis.
- Vessel elements probably evolved after. (only one or two basal species lack them)
- Sieve tubes after vessel elements
- All gymnosperms and seed ferns are or were woody, ancestral flowering plants were most likely woody perennials
- The annual habit of germinating, growing, reproducing, and dying in a single year is a unique angiosperm feature.
