The Nuclear Debate - Coggle Diagram
The Nuclear Debate
Intro: How to power the world without destroying it.
Mankind's thirst for energy
Industrialization
Third World Advances
Climate Change
"Peak Oil" - what happens when these fuels run out?
What to do?
Society is exploring multiple sources for renewable energy.
Wind, Solar, Hydro, Biofuels, Geothermal, and, of course, nuclear energy.
None of these modern alternatives is as highly debated as nuclear power.
Nuclear power has the highest energy output related to fuel consumption of any source on the planet, while producing very little waste.
Because of this tremendous potential, there is also the possibility of equally tremendous catastrophe.
To solve mankind's energy and climate crisis, a reasonable, multi-faceted approach that includes nuclear as a component will be required.
Pro Nuke
Energy potential
Low Waste
Operating cost
Anti Nuke
Disaster
Waste storage concerns X
Cost to build / investment turn around time X
Pro Reasonable Solution
Nuclear research is limited because of risks.
More research leads to safer and more efficient means of production
Research could lead to greater nuclear advances like fusion energy.
Control of nuclear energy cannot lie within single nations
Greed
Profit
Power
NIMBY issues
Comprehensive renewables plan
These measures need to be part of a larger plan to transition to renewable energy in a reasonable manner.
Wind, geothermal, solar
Reserve fossil fuels for only those operations that cannot exist otherwise (i.e. air travel)
