The Kingdoms of Living Things
Plants
Scientist group plants by the way they reproduce and by their structures-roots, stems, flowers, and leaves.
Scientists also look at the adaptation of plants.
One adaptation some plants have is vascular or nonvascular plants.
Bacteria
Are single-celled organisms that lack nuclei.
Scientists classify bacteria by the way they get energy, their size and shape.
One kingdom includes bacteria that live in very harsh environments.
The other kingdom includes all the other bacteria.
Fungi
Is an organism whose cells have walls but no chloroplasts.
Scientists classify fungi by their shape, size, and way of reproducing.
Animals
Scientists start by determining whether an animal has a backbone.
Vertebrates: animals with a backbone.
Reptiles
Birds
Amphibians
Mammals
Fish
Invertebrates: animals without a backbone.
Scientists classify invertebrates by whether their cells form tissues, how many kinds of tissues their cells for, whether they have a body cavity, and what type of body cavity they have.
Protists
Are microscopic organisms that may have characteristics of plants, animals, or fungi.
Animal-like: by their shape and size and by the way they move.
Fungus-like: mainly by their shape and by their reproductive structures.
Plantlike: they group the plantlike protists mainly by their color and the types of materials protists use to store food.
