Knowth:
-
-
It was built over 5000 years ago, probably after the construction of Newgrange and before the construction of Dowth.
-

The western passage is 34 metres long and the eastern passage is 40 metres long, ending with a cruciform chamber, similar to that found at Newgrange.
The chamber contains three recesses and basin stones, into which the cremated remains of the dead may have been placed.
Archaeologists began excavating the Great Mound at Knowth, and the smaller surrounding mounds in 1962.
Five years later, they discovered the first passage and chamber.
Kerbstones at Knowth:
Much of the artwork is found on the kerbstones, particularly approaching the entrances to the passage.

However, the megalithic art at Knowth contains an especially wide variety of designs, including such examples such as crescent shapes. Interestingly, much of this artwork was carved on the backs of the stones.

The Basin Stone:
This wonderfully carved granite basin is in the righthand recess of the Eastern Tomb and is one of the great treasures of Knowth.

The Macehead:
On the floor of the right-hand recess of the Eastern Tomb, archaeologists found a flint macehead.
We can speculate that it must have been a precious Ceremonial object due to the extremely detailed designs carved into it.
