Intro
physical symptoms without obvious cause
aka Medically Unexplained Sx, Somatic Sx Disorder, Somatoform Disorder
v common to have functional sx - dizziness, headaches, tummy aches
most make a full recovery
Causes
often occur @ times of stress (school, bullying, problems @ home)
a/w other mental health problems
Tx
CAMHS
sometimes CBT helpful
advice for parents
Reduce time spent thinking + talking about physical sx
try to avoid further medical consultations + investigations
Gradually encourage child to resume more activities
NEAD
Predisposing factors
family hx
anxious/perfectionist personality
long standing stress
developmental disorder e.g. ASD, ADHD
Precipitating factors
injury/infection/illness
distressing life events e.g. parents divorce
Perpetuating factors
talking a lot about them
missing school
having lots of medical exams/tests, increases stress
having physical rather than psych tx
Protective factors
good support
good understanding of stressors
Functional movement disorder
Factitious disorder
can be by proxy
Conversion disorder
blindness, paralysis, or other neuro sx that cannot be explained by medical evaluation
