PARABLE OF THE LOST SHEEP
LUKE 15:1-7
and
John 10:1-21
Have you ever get rejected by people?
Yes?
You have to remember that, the more you are rejected, the more you get attention of Jesus, the more people look down on you, the more Jesus will look at you.
Why are we so precious to God? Why does he show an unending love towards us? Why Jesus wants to be a sheperd for us?
Because we have sinned (astrayed)
1 Peter 2:25
"For you were like sheep going astray, but now you are going astray has returned to the Sheperd and keeper of your souls."
Isaiah 53:6
"We have all gone astray like sheep; took his own way, but God has laid on him our iniquity all. "Sinful man is the lost lamb."
"God looks for them and doesn't give up, until He finds them"
St. Augustine said
, "God loves every person as if there was no one else to love."
Speaking about
sheep
in those days, keeping the sheep from getting
lost
, either the sheep went away, or people stole it.
At that time a person who had Sheep will usually hire a keeper.
The gates of which are access to the cage was only made of one, so it was not easy for thieves and robbers to take it.
APPLICATION
: This shows that how God Keeps us from sinning, even being tempted to fell into sin. We are sheep that are easily lost, easily influenced and tempted to fall into sin.
John 10:1
said that there were thieves and robbers
In Greek a thief called a
"Kleptes"
is a person who has the character of full of deceit, so they steal the sheep with deceit.
While a robber in Greek is called
"Lestes"
is someone who takes what did not belong to him in a violent manner
Evil will tempt us with trickery, some even using violence, becasue we are the
sheeps
.
But the Word of God says if we take Jesus as our Shepherd and He will go before us, the sheep will follow Him.
As a sheep, we cannot fight sin using our strength, sheep are foolish animals, very easily distracted, deceived by property, position, worldly things, very easy to tortured, do not have the ability to fight back.
How does the Shepherd take care of the sheep?
By His Voice: The voice of the shepherd is known to the sheep. John:4-5
The voice here is the word of God, the less we are listening to the Word has the potential to fall into sin.
Mother Teresa
said, "My secret is a very simple one: I pray, Prayer is simply talking to God He speaks to us; we listen. We speak to him; he listens. A two way process speaking and listening."
Through His sacrifice: In
John 10:11
, Jesus gave His life to protect us, who dared to fight the wolves that comes to bite the sheep.
The more we feel the sacrifice of Christ on the Cross, the more we will not dare to sin.
Because We Are Weak and Helpless. All of us are like the lost sheep, helpless.
Psalm 103: 14
, "For He Himself knows what we are, He remembers what we are dust"
Based on the book
"the habits and characteristics of a sheep"
, we can discover that a sheep is a weak and helpless animal.
The sheep's habit is to wander and get lost. They always want to go to the greener grass on the other side of the fence.
Sheeps are stubborn animals - they want to go their own way.
You can't teach a sheep tricks
Even cattle don't need a shepherd, the sheep often go to dangerous areas and then trapped.
They can't take care of themselves compare to other animals.
They don't think what will happen next.
God's time
In the time of Jesus, a person who had a hundred sheep must have a shepherd who works for him, a shepherd must know the name of every sheep, and count them at least once a day.
The sheep will waiting for someone. When the shepherd found the sheep, he put it on his shoulder, to protect the sheep and return to the barn. 70 heavy pound (almost 32 kg).
Like a sheep, God carried us, he put us on his shoulder, when he finds us as a lost sheep.
God considers us important not because we are strong, great and smart but because we are weak and helpless.
God’s love to the weak and helpless never ends.
In
John 10:7
it says Jesus is the door for the sheep. It means that the guardian of us is Jesus. In those days a shepherd was willing to sleep in front of the door, just to guard the sheep.
For no joy is more beautiful to God than to find us as lost sheep. There is a Rejoice when the lost sheep are found.
Luke 15:6
, “And when he arrived home he called his friends and neighbors and said To them, Rejoice with me, for the sheep that were lostI have found it. “
John 10:3
says “He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out”
For most people, the name may not be a matter. But for me if someone calls me by name, it is an honor and respect. Jesus calls us by name, means we are something to His eyes.
