Virtual relationships
AO1
According to the hyperpersonal model, in virtual relationships using computer mediated communication (CMC) people are more likely to self-disclose personal information about themselves more quickly than in face to face (FtF) relationships.
-
Another aspect of virtual relationships that differs from FtF communication is that there is an absence of gating. This means individuals may be able to start a relationship where they where they may not if they met face to face
For example, people may have a facial disfigurement or a stammer that is an obstacle preventing them from initiating communication. Starting a relationship online means that the barrier ('gates') are not present so a relationship can develop and once the self-disclosure increases, the gates become less of an issue.

Parasocial relationships

Explanations
Attachment theory
Early attachment problems mean that the individuals are unable to form successful relationships later in life due to their internal working model.
If they are unable to communicate effectively and lack social skills, individuals may develop a parasocial relationship that is one-sided and therefore preferable.
Insecure resistant types of attachment are more likely to form a parasocial relationship because there is no fear of rejection and they can have their unfulfilled needs met.
