Tectonics
Prediction and Management
Earthquakes
Accurate prediction of earthquakes is not possible.
Earthquakes are forecasted based on statistical likelihood
Forecasts can be based on historic trends and current seismic monitoring
Volcanoes
Can be predicted with some accuracy.
Seismometers pick up tremors
Tiltmeters examine bulges of magma
Spectrometers pick up radon gas emissions
Hazard Management Cycle
Outlines the relationship between different stages of disaster response
Mitigation: identifies potential hazards and seeks to minimise their effects. Can be land-use zoning, building regulation, defences etc
Preparation: becoming ready for the next event. Can be through community education, evacuation drills etc
Response: the immediate help in the aftermath of a disaster. Includes search and rescue and restoration of vital infrastructure
Recovery: long term reconstruction. Rebuilding infrastructure etc
Park's Model
A graphical representation of places' responses to disasters
Steepness of the curve shows how quickly a place returns to pre-disaster QoL
Relief stage: immediate response
Rehabilitation stage: services restored, aid co-ordinated
Reconstruction stage: restoration of previous QoL. Mitigation put in place
Can be compared between developed / developing countries
