1945-50 - food shortages causes prices to rise, 50% wages were spent on food

stalin used communal housing to deal with urbanisation but it was not properly funded

redistribution to ensure more equality

entire families lived in one room with shared facilities
by 1940, average family living space reduced to 4 square metres
approx. 1/3 of housing destroyed during WW2 but Stalin still prioritised industry
