Morphology is the area of linguistics which is concerned with the internal structure of words. It is usually divided into:

In considering word formation strategies, we can only consider the open classes of words; the reasons are:
1) members of the closed classes are largely simple words with relatively few being divisible into smaller units;

When considering word formation, we can divide words into two categories:
- Complex words, which can be subdivided into smaller units of meaning.
- Simple words, which cannot being analysed into smaller units of meaning.

Some definitions

- Polysemous: when a word has more than one meaning.
- Homonyms: separate lexemes but take the same citation form.
- Register: it is the appropriate context in which to use a word.
- Collocation is a typical combination of lexemes.
Affixation
It is the process by which bound morphemes are added to bases to form new words. A bound morpheme which is added is an affix.
