Genetics Week 15
-
Misc.
- Gynandromorph: individual animals that have both genetically male and female tissues and often have observable male and female characteristics.
15.Satellite DNA: the phenomenon that repetitions of a short DNA sequence tend to produce a different frequency of the bases.
- ARS: an autonomously replicating sequence contains the origin of replication in the yeast genome.
- G bands: a technique used in cytogenetics to produce a visible karyotype by staining condensed chromosomes.
Genetic Movement
- Transposition: moving genetic segments from one location to the other in a genome
- Paracentric: occurs when a portion of one chromosome, or a packet of genetic information, is flipped so that the order of genetic information changes.
- Pericentric: is indicative of involvement of the centromere in the inversion process.
- Reciprocal Translocation: a chromosome abnormality caused by exchange of parts between non-homologous chromosomes.
Number of Chromosomes
- Polyploidy: condition in which the cells of an organism have more than two paired sets of chromosomes
- Aneuploidy: having an abnormal number of chromosomes in a haploid set
- Euploids: having an exact multiple of the haploid number of chromosomes
