Public health care, sharing resources and personnel with the IESS, is separate and receives less funding. It is free for all.

Private Healthe
Private quality varies from very good to non-existent. Private doctors are well trained, many come from the USA, Argentina, Chile and Cuba, known for having the best medical schools.

Major diseases
Food or waterborne diseases: Bacterial diarrhea, hepatitis A and typhoid fever.
Diseases transmitted by insects: Yellow fever, dengue fever and malaria.

Communicable diseases: OMS reports that 18% of the total 81,000 deaths in 2016 resulted from environmental conditions, smoking and malnutrition.
Non-communicable diseases: Cancer, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases also negatively affect the Ecuadorian population.
Nutrition: Lack of it, is another of Ecuador's main problems. In 2006, 25.8% of children under 5 suffered from chronic malnutrition, and in 2013, 26%. This trend is related to socioeconomic disparities.
