Verbos modales: 'Need'
'Need' can work as a modal helper, although it is considered a semi-modal because it has some differences:
- 'Need' is an exception because it can be followed by an infinitive with "to".
- The third person singular does not have -s in the present simple
- It does not have compound or progressive times
- It does not have an infinitive
It is used mainly in negative and interrogative sentences to give, deny or ask permission.
Needn't indicates absence of obligation or necessity. (Don't have to ..., don't need to ...).
'Need' can function as the main verb of the sentence (need), and in that case it works as an ordinary verb (it has infinitive, progressive and compound tenses, and the third person singular has a final -s in the present simple).

You don't need to go to school on weekends (Verbo principal) (No tienes que ir al colegio los fines de semana porque está cerrado).

You needn't/need not have bought me a present (Verbo modal) (No tenías por qué haberme comprado un regalo ).
The difference is that the first for something general or habitual (an imposed external norm) and the second is used for something concrete (permission is granted).
In the first example, as the main verb, it tells you that it is not necessary to do this (it may or may not have been done).
However, the second example, as a modal, tells you that it was not necessary to buy anything from you, but you have.
