Pope Urban II leader of the Catholic church called for a crusade to regain Jerusalem for Christianity
The kings and noblemen of Western Europe formed great armies to meet popes demand
They won Jerusalem in the first Crusade
more crusades fallowed but were not successful
Muslims took back Jerusalem and Muslim power continued to grow
religious pilgrimage (key word): a visit to lands that were important to the history of Christianity
Invaders threatened the region
No strong government existed to fight off invasions
They started a system called feudalism
Under the system kings gave land to nobles
Nobles became either knights or warriors on horses
Nobles gave kings military service
They call this the Middle Ages or Medieval Age
the term describes a period of transition of ancient and modern times
many crusaders
returned to European homes
changed ideas
richer
more powerful
more modern world in east
these began to spread across Northern Europe
economy
western Europe
Village grew to towns
work became specialized
traders and murchents
play bigger role in town life
people with important skills
metalsmiths
butchers
began to organized into guilds
