mammals - Coggle Diagram
mammals
hair and mammary glands:
charecterstitics that distinguish members of class mammal from other vertebrate animals are hair and mammary glands
-
-functions of hair
- insulation
- camouflage
- sensory devices
- waterproofing
- defense
- hair is made of fibrous protein called keratin
endotherms:
- internal sources of body heart
- heat is produced by a high metabolic rate
- body temperature is regulated by internal feedback mechanasims
feeding and digestion
- mammalogists divide mammals into 4 trophic catagories
- omnivores : feed on both plants and animals
- herbivores : feed on vegitation
- plants are more difficult to digest and take longer time than the digestion meat
- the enzymes in the digestive system of mammals cannot digest cellulose
- some herbivores have bacteria in cecum
- other herbivores have bacteria in their stomach
- carnivores : feed on herbivores
- insectivores: eat insects and small invertebrates
mammals teeth:
teeth reveal the life habits of mammals
biologists can determine what mammals eats by examining its teeth
- canines to stab
- premolars to slice and tear meat
- incisors are long and curved, functioning as pincers in seizing insect prey
Excretion
- the kidneys of mammals exert metabolic waste and maintain the homeostatic balance of body fluids
- kidneys enable mammals to live in extreme enviromennt such as deserts
Respiration
- high levels of oxygen are required to maintain a high level of metabolisim
- mammals are the only animals that have a diaphram
diaphragm : a sheet of muscles located beneath the lungs
circulation
- mammals require a consistent supply of nutrients and oxygen to homeostasis
- keeping oxygenated and deoxygenated blood separate makes the delivery of nutrients and oxygen more efficient
the brain and senses
brain
- mammals have highly developed brains
- cerebral cortex: is a responsible for coordinating conscious activities memory and ability to learn
- cerebellum is responsible for balance and coordinations movement
senses
- mammals carry out complex behaviors like learning and remebering
- the importance of the senses varies from 1 group to anothe
Glands
- a system of glands - groups of cells that secrete fluids to be used in the body - helps regulate a mammals internal enviroment
movement
- mammals must find food, shelter and escapes from predetors
have evolved a variety of limbs for purpose
mammals run, fly and swim
