Transport in Plants
Uptake of water by roots
-
-
-
Movement of water along the root hair cells, into the root cortex, into the xylem
Osmosis
-
Plant cell
Cellulose wall:
Fully permeable as it has holes,
Can resist changes in pressure inside cell
-
Turgid: Cell swells up and cytoplasm pushes against cell wall.
Occurs when placed in pure water/dilute solution
Turgor pressure pushes neighbouring cells against each other.
This supports young stems and leaves and holds stems upright so leaves can carry out photosynthesis properly
-
-
Plasmolysed: Excessive loss of water, membrane/cytoplasm pulls away from cell wall
-
Transpiration
Loss of water by leaves
Succulents have thick layer of waxy cuticle and leaves reduced to spines which have a low SA. Both reduce water loss
Transpiration stream - Transpiration causes water to be pulled up the xylem in stem + roots in continuous flow
