- - - - Oral Answers To Questions The students can be asked questions to test their knowledge of fact based aspects of music like music theory or musicology (music history). With these questions the teacher can not only assess whether or not they answer a question correctly but also the length of time taken by the student to answer the question. It's an opportunity to assess both what they know and how well they know it.
      - End of Semester Juries For instrumental music assessment at the University Level, students are required to perform full pieces of music to the faculty of their instrumental family (string instruments for the string faculty, woodwind for the woodwind faculty etc). This is in effect a full performance where the faculty will grade the student based off a number of factors (intonation, phrasing, tone, appropriate style in accordance with the genre etc). This not only tests the students growth on their instrument but also their ability to perform under pressure in a generally unfriendly environment.
        
        Requirements for Jury from Carnegie Melon University School of Music All students registered for Major Studio or BXA Studio must perform a jury each semester at the time scheduled by the School of Music. (This includes composition majors, performance majors, and BXA majors with a concentration in music.) The only exception to this rule is the policy, applicable to many but not all studio areas, that a jury need not be performed at the end of a semester during which a required recital is performed.
        Requirements for the jury performance (i.e., repertoire, memorization, collaborative pianist, etc.) are defined by the faculty in each studio area. If the faculty require a collaborative pianist, the collaborative pianist guidelines will apply.       - Aural Skills Exams This is a way to test the students aural ability in music. The teacher tests the students ability to hear and identify different types of chords, chord progressions, chord inversions, scales and many other aspects of music listening.
