Citizenship
Shaped by legal status
By descent, by country of birth, by marriage or by naturalisation
Citizens must consider the sensitivities and safety of others when exercising their rights as SG does not discriminate in basic rights such as educations and healthcare for citizens
It is the responsibility of citizens to obey all legal laws of the country and not to discriminate against ppl of different races/religions + different countries emphasise different responsibilities (eg. SG requires all males 18 and above to be conscripted for National Service)
X legal status => a person would not have rights of a citizen and would not want to integrate into society

Shaped by identity
A common identity for all participants is impt (eg. having shared beliefs and practices among all citizens like singing the National Anthem and reciting the National Pledge) as it leads all citizens to care for each other, regardless of race/religion
X a sense of common identity => no pride in being a citizen and hence no active involvement to want to participate in the affairs of the country
Legal status, common identity and public participation are important and interconnected in shaping citizenship
