Special Adaptations of Plants
FERNS
The plant encourages which burns away other competing plants
Adapts to various climates by being dormant in the winter.
The plant can be poisonous to animals and other plants.
Have underground stems which act like a food store when the fern is unable to photosynthesize during dry conditions
.
ORCHIDS
Slide shaped leaves lets rain run off so fungus doesn't grow.
Orchid plants have storage organs that store water for the plant
Drip- tip leaves help drain excess water.
Their roots help secure it high in a tree and absorb water from the air.
COTTON GRASS
It is short, which protects it from the harsh winds
These leaves have a large surface area which maximizes its exposure to light.
The hair on the leaf creates a microclimate which protects the plant from extremes of heat and cold.
This grass has small seeds that can easily be dispersed by the wind to ensure its survival
CACTUS
No leaves, so water doesn't evaporate quickly
Some have shallow, wide spread roots for collecting water quickly when it rains, and others have, very long deep roots.
Spikes to protect it from being eaten
Thick stem for holding water and preventing water loss
ARCTIC
POPPIES
Their root system is made up of runners that reach out for water over a wide area.
Hairy stem to retain heat
They can move parts of themselves. Their flowers can track sunlight and turn towards the direction of the sun during the day.
