UNIT 5: ENERGY - Coggle Diagram
UNIT 5: ENERGY
1. MECHANICAL ENERGY
- Energy an object has due to its motion and its position
-
2. CHEMICAL ENERGY
- Energy stored in all matter.
- It's released through a chemical reaction.
- It's a type of potential energy.
Food ---- digesting food (energy to move)
Wood ---- burning wood (heat, light)
3. LIGHT ENERGY
- Energy that allows us to see things.
- Travels in waves, bounces off objects and enters our eyes.
- Travels in a straight line in all directions and faster than anything else.
MATERIALS
- Opaque: light can't travel through them. Ex: wood, stone, metal.
- Transparent: light can travel through them. Ex: clear glass, clear water.
- Translucent: only some light passes through them. Ex: frosted glass.
- Reflection: light bounces off a surface. It's the reason we can see things. Ex: mirror.
- Refraction: light changes direction because it travels faster through air, slower through water.
- Dispersion: separation into different colours because white light is made up of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet light.
4. SOUND ENERGY
- Energy that allows us to hear things.
- Travel in waves and makes the air vibrate.
- Travel in all directions very fast, but much slower than light.
- Travel through different materials (solid, liquid, gases).
- Don't travel through vacuum (completely empty space) or space (no air).
- Noise pollution: sounds that are harmful.
5. THERMAL ENERGY
- The kinetic energy caused by the movement of particles in matter.
- Temperature is related to the movement of particles. Hot (particles move quickly), cold (particles move slowly).
- Heat: thermal energy moves from a hot object to a cool object.
6. ELECTRICAL ENERGY
- Electric current: a current of electric charge.
- Battery: positive and negative charge.
- Electric circuit.
- We use it to power machines.
- Generated in power stations.
- It can be transformed into other types of energy (ex: sound, heat, light, movement).
