Bases/Alkalis
Definition
A base is a substance that reacts with an acid to form salt and water only. Bases are usually metal oxides or metal hydroxides
Alkalis are bases that dissociate in water to produce hydroxide ions, OH- (aq). Alkalis are usually metal hydroxide solutions with the exception of aqueous ammonia (base).
-
Strength of alkalis
A strong alkali completely dissociates in water to give hydroxide ions (e.g. KOH, NaOH, Ca(OH)2)

Uses of bases
to neutralise acids (e.g. toothpaste to neutralise acids on our teeth, Mg(OH)2 to neutralise excess gastric juice due to HCL), lime (Ca(OH)2 to neutralise acidic soil)
to dissolve dirt and grease (e.g. soap and detergents, floor cleaners often contain NaOH, ammonia is used in liquids for cleaning windows)
