Lenin had little initial support, even amongst Bolsheviks. July Days, 500,000 soldiers and sailor protested in streets of Petrograd. Petrograd soviet and Prov gov blamed Bolsheviks for unrest, issued arrest warrants. Lenin fled. Lyov replaced by Kerensky as head of Prov gov. Kerensky established free speech, ended capital punishment, but desertion and famine still commonplace.
