THYROID CRISIS
DEFINITION
an acute, life threatening, hyper-metabolic state
induced by excessive release of thyroid hormone
in individuals with thyrotoxicosis.
Also referred to as thyroid storm
CARE PLAN
remove extra blankets to reduce high temperature
ensure adequate rehydration through IV fluids
electrolyte replacement
nutritional support
administer antithyroid medications
MANAGEMENT
Antithyroid drugs; propylthiouracil or methimazole
Temperature control
Administration of IV fluids
Beta-blockers
CAUSES
Major stress like trauma
Heart attack
Infection in people with hyperthyroidism
PATHOPHYSIOLOGY
manifestation of the thyrotoxic state.
Related to increased numbers of beta1-adrenergic
Thyroid storm is an acutely exaggerated
receptors being exposed to increased
catecholamine levels in states of stress.

CLINICAL MANIFESTATIONS
Restlessness
Sweating
Tachycardia
Hyperthermia
Diarrhoea
Confusion
Change in consciousness
Agitation
