GSM
Operates at the 850MHz, 900MHz, 1800MHz and 1900MHz frequency bands.
Coordinates the communication between a mobile telephones (mobile stations), base stations (cell sites), and switching systems.
GSM Architecture
A Mobile Station
Mobile phone that consists of the transceiver, the display and processor and controlled by a SIM card.
Network Subsystem
Provides the basic network connection to the mobile station. The basic part is Mobile Service Switching Center(MSSC) with access different network like ISDN, PSTN. Also consists Home Location Register and Visitor Location Register
Base Station Subsystem
Acts as an interface between mobile station and the network subsystem. Consists the Base Transceiver Station which contains the radio transceivers and handles protocols for communication.
GSM & GPRS Architecture
Base Transceiver System (BTS)
Distributed across the country thereby providing GSM &GPRS coverage to the mobile.
Base Station Controller (BSC)
Located in centralized sites, the BSCs are used to manage a number of BTS.
Mobile Switching Center (MSC)
Used to setup and clear down voice calls, deliver text messages. To tracking location of the mobile under management.
Gateway Mobile Switching Center (GMSM)
Typically used to provide a connection to other network service that provides mobile or fixed
