Exploring Health Professions
Knowing your Strengths
What? I took the Clifton Strengths quiz to determine what my top five strengths are. Then, I discussed the results with some of my peers and got to see what their top five strengths are.
Now What? Now that I know what my strengths are I can find ways to use them in my everyday life and use them to become a better healthcare professional in the future.
So What? Based on the results of the Clifton Strengths Quiz was able to learn about what I do well and reflect on what I can do with these skills.
Professional Development Portfolios
So What? Through this I have been able to increase the number of connections I have and I am now prepared to apply for volunteering, shadowing, research, and work positions.
Now What? Now I have a solid foundation to build my resume on and I will be able to continue to make new professional connections. This foundation also allows me to be more confident in the resume I present to others and focus on some of the other aspects when applying to a new position, like the interview.
What? I made a professional resume, a LinkedIn profile, and a Handshake profile.
Patient Centered Care
So What? Based on what I learned in the Escape Fire movie I was able to reflect on what my beliefs and feelings were before watching the movie, what new information I learned, and what changes I wanted to make in the future based on what I had learned from the movie. I did this for several different categories including self, family, workplace, etc.
Now What? Based on the reflects I made, I now need to actually apply the changes I want to make to my real life. For me, a huge take away from the Escape Fire movie was the need for empathy. Since I am not in the medical field yet, I plan on applying this my being more mindful of what my friends and family are say and truly listen and understand them. This will help me in future, because it will make me a better person and it will make me a better doctor if I am already in the habit of listening and having empathy for others.
What? I watched the Escape Fire movie. In this movie I got to see health care from many different perspectives. Then, I discussed what I learned with small groups of my peers in class.
Human Side of Healthcare: Social and Cultural Underpinnings
So What? I was blown away but the number of outside factors that can affect a persons health. I knew that diet and being active were important, but sometimes I forget just how little access people have to make these things happen. It breaks my heart that people could be healthier in general if we actually put some effort into making it happen. I thought that the implicit bias was very interesting and important, because it got me thinking about what I could be doing better to not have any implicit bias.
Now What? Now that I am aware of the societal factors of health I can make sure to keep these in mind when I am a doctor, so that I make sure the suggestions and instructions I give a patient are actually practical for the situation that they are in. I also how to advocate to make these factors improve for everyone.
What? I watched several videos about the social factors that affect health, and I took an implicit bias quiz to determine what implicit bias I have, so that I can work to get rid of them.
Cross-Cutting Skills: Society, Culture, and Ethics
What? I watched Extremis and saw what it was like from a patient's, a family's, and a doctor's point of view what it is like to have to make end of life decisions. I also completed HIPPA and BBP certifications.
So What? I had never really thought about end of life decisions before watching this movie. I knew that people have to make them and that they were very difficult decisions to make, but since I am only 19 I never worried about it. This movie really got me thinking about what would happen if this happened to me or my and if we would all know what the others would want in that situation. I had thought about this situation from a doctor's point of view, but I thought this movie really brought out how emotional it can be even for the doctors.
Now What? Now, I understand the importance of talking about end of life decisions and why empathy is so important. I want to remember the families and patients point of view when I am a doctor, so even if the patient and/or family makes a decision I don't agree with, I can understand how difficult it must have been to reach that decision at all.
Exploring Healthcare Careers
What? I watched three videos from the Healthcare Workforce Diversity Symposium and got to hear first hand experiences about different jobs in the healthcare field. I also heard about many different healthcare careers from the student presentations given in class.
So What? After hearing many different presentations I have a better understanding of all the options I have in the healthcare field. I found this fact very comforting, because I know it is very difficult to get into medical school. Knowing that I have so many choices if I decide not to go or don't get in made me feel a lot better.
Now What? Now that I know some of the different career paths that I could potentially chose from I can make back up plan just in case going to medical school does not work out.
Cross-Cutting Skills: Inter-professional Collaboration
Now What? Now that I have seen how important inter-professional collaboration is, I can make sure it is something I strive for in every professional environment I am in.
So What? These videos emphasized the importance of teamwork in professional settings, especially if you are in the healthcare field.
What? I watched several videos, and I, and the rest of the class, determined if inter-professional collaboration was present. If there was not, we discussed what could have been done better.
Steps in Building a Professional Application
So What? I found this presentation to be very informative and allowed me to set goals for myself in order to accomplish all things I need to get done to show that I am a competitive applicant.
Now What? Now that I know what I need to do, and I have set goals in order to do those things, I actually have to go out and do them. I met with my PPAC advisor and we made a plan for me to get everything done. This summer I will begin volunteer at a hospital and shadowing, and I will begin researching fall semester. I also am involved in student organizations, and I now have a leadership position in one of them.
What? I listened to a presentation from the PPAC on what factors make a competitive application and learned what I can be doing to ensure that my application is competitive.
