Trudgill
People of all social classes see the language of middle and upper classes as ‘correct’ and more prestigious, and the language of the working class as ‘incorrect’ and less prestigious. This perception is publicly recognised, and so is called ‘overt prestige’ (‘overt’ means ‘out in the open’)
The language of working class people is seen as more honest, more down-to-earth, authentic, and more masculine. This perception is not generally recognised, and so is called ‘covert prestige’ (‘covert’ means ‘hidden’)
