Overview
Cyberbullying is bullying that take place using electronic technology which includes devices and equipment such as cell phones, computers and tablets. Also it includes social media sites, text messages, chat and websites.
There are several ways cyberbullying can take place such as mean text messages, email or posts on social media sites.
Children who are being bullied on social media are also normally being bullied in real life.
What is cyberbullying and why is it different?
This is a bullying that takes place via electronic devices and through social media but can also happen in person.
Cyberbullying can happen 24/7 and can even reach a child when they are alone.
cyberbullying is an issue because people can post anonymously and it can reach a wide audience and it can be hard to trace.
Effects of cyberbullying.
Although is can be easy to blame social media sites at the core children are still to blame for bullying other children.
kids who are cyberbullied are more likely to use alcohol and drugs, skip school, experience in person bullying, not want to attend school, have poor grades, have lower self-esteem, have more health problems.
There has been no evidence to show that cyberbullying has less of an effect than in person bullying.
Ways to prevent cyberbullying.
Parents need to be aware of what their children are doing online, know the sites theyre visiting, talk to your kids about responsibility online.
Have a sense of what they are sending in messages and have the passwords for all ther devices.
Establish rules about technology including things like turn off times and talk to them about what they post or say. Make sure they are not sharing passwords with friends or anyone online.
Understand the school rules for technology and cyberbullying.
Report cyberbullying right away and make sure to keep evidence of any and all cyberbullying. Report cyberbullying to the online service it goes through also.
report any incidences to school and also local law enforcement if you want the problem to stop.
