Bullying exerts psychiatric effects into adulthood.
Bullying has now been shown to move with the child into adulthood causing issues such as anxiety, depression, substance abuse, and suicide.
It has been shown that children who went through childhood unscathed , had four time less the presence of agoraphobia, generalized anxiety panic disorders when they become adults.
Bullies also had four times the risk of developing antisocial personality disorder.
Bullies will start out with less developed social skills and are seen as more impulsive and aggressive. when being picked on they respond in the same way.
The results of studies show that people who were picked on had four times the risk to to develop mental health disorders.
Background
Bullying is a repetitive, aggressive, act done to abuse or intimidate others.
There are various forms of bullying now and they include more than in the past, they include primarily verbal, emotional, and physical, although cyberbullying is on the rise.
There are groups of children that will torment one child and it includes threats, rumor-spreading, and exclusion.
Although a lot of these studies are only short term it shows that most people think children who are bullied get over it as they move into adulthood.
There was a study done on children from 11 western carolina counties and they found there were four groups, people who were never involved in bullying, people who were victims, people who were bullies and people who were both.
Results of the study.
The study proved that more than half the study's showed youth reported being neither bully nor a victim. about 7% admitted to being a bully and a similar percentage said they were both.
Victims had much more prevalence than children who were not bullied so develop mental health disorders and bullies had four times the risk of developing anti-scoail personality disorder.
Bully-victims fared the worst and started with less developed social skills and were labeled as impulsive and aggressive.
It effects all involved differently but the results for the specific groups are the same, victims across the board deal with the same issues and the same goes for the other groups.
What's next
They have already started looking into interventions to prevent bullying.
They are also looking into which age is the best to implement these interventions.
Significance
These disorders that develop in these groups impart a great emotional and financial cost to society.
If we can get this under control society would be better off in the long run.
Research into resilience and why some people bounce back better and watch the different pathways in the brain and how it affects people.
