uses of language

Persuasive: such as in ads which attempt to persuade the public to purchase something
description: some language is meant to describe something
evaluation: other language is meant to evaluate a condition of something
understanding factual statements and opinions
factual statement: can be verified with evidence.
opinion: tells how someone feels about something
a critical skill to develop
develop this skill by reading current news stories and having discussions
recognizing the author's purpose and point of view
3 main purposes for writing: persuade, inform, entertain
Students should be able to recognize which type of writing it is so that they could apply a specific reading strategy.
strategies: read alouds with an encyclopedia article, short story, magazine editorial
Students can find the author's purpose in each text and discuss the differences
drawing logical conclusions
teach students to examine evidence carefully
model how to make a logical conclusion and provide guided practice
students should examine many facts and arrive at a reasoned judgment
finding textual evidence

read a statement to students
have them find evidence for the statement
create a for/against page and students find evidence for each column
judging sources
teach students to look at authors of texts to check for validity
check the book jacket for information on the source
check the date of the text
