Fantasy
Literature that includes magic or events that couldn't happen in real life
2 categories: low fantasy, high fantasy
Low fantasy: story is realistic but may have one magic element

High fantasy: Story may be set in another world and include many magical/supernatural events
Harry Potter series
Types of fantasy: animals, toys, unreal worlds, ghost stories, time warps, magic powers
Science Fiction
Set within the realm of possibility, no elements of magic, futuristic
Divergent Series
Historical fiction
Stories that are set in the past, could have happened in the past but made up by the author

Realistic Fiction
Stories feature events and problems which could occur in real life
Plausible v Probable
Probable - sometimes unlikely
Plausible - things that could actually occur
Features: credible characters and settings, plot reflects real-life problems that can be understood by children, theme relates to contemporary social issues, usually teach students about life
Types: survival and adventure, mystery, humor, animals, sports, friendship, family, growing up, disability, foster homes, loss

Nonfiction
Books about real things, events that have actually happened
2 types: informational, and literary nonfiction
Informational: convey information / expository texts
Literary nonfiction: books that convey information in a story like form / narrative nonfiction
Multicultural Literature
Literature that features people who are diverse in many ways
Race, ethnicity, nationality, gender, social class, exceptionality, religion, sexual orientation, language, disability
